Caring About Your Oral Health

Caring About Your Oral HealthMany people assume that losing teeth is a natural part of the aging process. In truth, tooth loss is primarily associated with gum disease and can cause extensive bone loss and a loss of self confidence. With proper oral care and regular visits to our Northridge dentist, it is quite possible to retain your natural teeth throughout the course of your life.

Proper brushing technique is a critical first step in your oral care. Your toothbrush should have soft bristles and be of a comfortable size and shape to fit your mouth. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to your brush, and hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and brush in a gentle back and forth movement. Repeat along the sides, front, and back of each tooth on the top and bottom and bottom of your mouth. Spend about two minutes brushing your teeth before finishing by brushing or scraping your tongue and rinsing. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day.

Flossing removes plaque from between your teeth and along the gumline, where brushing alone cannot reach. If you neglect to floss on a daily basis, you are at high risk of developing periodontal, or gum, disease, which can lead to tooth loss, pregnancy complications, heart disease, and other serious health consequences.

Regular Dental Checkups

Biannual visits to our Northridge cosmetic dentist play as critical a role in your oral health as brushing and flossing. At your six month checkup, you will receive a thorough cleaning and polishing to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. Along with dental exam and cleaning, our dentist can whiten and brighten your teeth with a teeth whitening treatment appropriate for your teeth as well. If you have any signs of gum disease, you will also receive a periodontal treatment plan to help you improve your oral health.
