Common Dental Diseases and Problems

Common Dental Diseases and ProblemsA periodontist is a dentist who is an expert at treating periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. However, that is not the extent of their expertise. Our Northridge periodontist, provides many treatments that involve the teeth, gums, and jaw.

Nearly everyone experiences a dental problem at some point in their lives. Fortunately, modern dentistry can take care of the majority of these problems. However, it is important to be aware of the causes of the most common dental problems so that you work to prevent them from happening to you.

Perhaps the most commonly seen dental problem in any dental office is plaque and tartar buildup, and the cavities that result. Plaque is a mixture of bacteria, food particles and white blood cells. If it isn’t cleaned away by proper brushing and flossing, it hardens into a hard yellow substance called tartar. Aside from being unattractive, tartar is harmful to the teeth because it leaves your teeth vulnerable to cavities. Cavities are formed when the acids in the plaque and tartar eat away at the tooth enamel, causing tooth decay.

Periodontal disease is also a frequent issue among patients. Like cavities, periodontal disease is caused by plaque and tartar buildup. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tissue loss, bone loss or even tooth loss.

Missing teeth are another common problem. Missing teeth can result from advanced tooth decay or periodontal disease, or from trauma to the mouth. Missing teeth should be replaced because over time, the adjacent teeth will shift into the open spot, affecting the appearance of your mouth as well as your bite and your speech.

If you experience any of these common dental problems, or other dental problems, call our dentist in Northridge. He can help fix the problem and help prevent future problems from recurring.
