Dairy Products for Preventing Cavities
What you eat may have a bigger effect on your teeth than you ever imagined, according to a recent study. According to this study, which was published in the May/June 2013 issue of “General Dentistry,” cheese may help protect your teeth from decay.
The study participants were between 12 and 15 years old. Researchers evaluated their oral pH levels before and after snacks of milk, sugar-free yogurt and cheese. Low pH levels can increase the risk of enamel erosion while higher pH levels tend to have a protective effect. The group of study participants swished with water immediately after enjoying their snacks, and then their pH levels were tested at various intervals. The group that had consumed yogurt and milk had no changes in their oral pH levels, but the cheese group had significantly higher pH levels.
Researchers theorized that the cheese not only stimulated saliva production but may also contain compounds that adhere to the teeth to protect them from acid. Cheese can be a healthy part of your balanced diet. It can be enjoyed as a between-meals snack or with fruit at the end of a meal for a tooth-friendly dessert. Wait to brush your teeth about half an hour after any meal or snack to give your teeth a chance to remineralize and pH levels to normalize, which helps reduce the risk of enamel erosion.
