Gum Disease Risk Factors
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in American adults. It's also been linked to a number of serious health conditions. Although a small percentage of people may be genetically predisposed to gum disease, certain risk factors can dramatically increase your odds of developing gum disease.
You may be at greater risk of developing gum disease if:
You do not brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily.
You use tobacco. Smoking or chewing tobacco is one of the greatest risk factors for developing periodontal disease because it slows healing and decreases your ability to fight infection.
You are a female and going through the hormonal changes that accompany puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
You have a health condition that compromises your immune system.
You are taking certain medications, like calcium channel blockers, birth control pills, and others. It is crucial that you discuss your current medication regimen with our Northridge dentist.
You do not have good control over the stress in your life. Stress compromises the immune system, leaving you more susceptible to infection.
You do not eat a healthy diet. Eating a diet rich in simple carbohydrates or excessive amounts of sugar encourages the growth of plaque, while a lack of vitamin- and mineral-rich foods weakens your immune system.
You skip or delay your regular dental cleanings. These checkups clean away missed plaque and tartar, and our Northridge cosmetic dentist will check for signs of gum disease and other oral health problems and formulate a treatment plan if necessary.
If you have one or more risk factors for gum disease, a checkup is in order to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy. If you are at high risk of developing gum disease, you may need more frequent checkups to maintain your oral health.
You can schedule regular checkups and cleanings with our dentist to ensure your dental health. Our dentist offers various treatments, including root canal treatment, dental fillings, dental crowns and dental implants for treating common problems. Cosmetic dentistry treatments such as teeth whitening, Zoom whitening, porcelain veneers and Invisalign aligners are also offered by our dentist.
