Healthy Snacks for Your Teeth
A healthy diet consists of plenty of produce, whole grains, lean protein and heart-healthy fats. Most people enjoy three meals a day, but snacks can also play an important role in your diet by ensuring that you get all the nutrients you need to stay healthy.
The right snacks can help keep your teeth healthy, too. Although many people grab quick and easy snacks from vending machines, the kinds of treats usually available in vending machines tend to be processed, low in nutrients and bad for your teeth. Occasional treats are all right, but choose wisely. If you are craving chocolate, choose dark chocolate, which is a great source of antioxidants, flavonoids and tannins. Dark chocolate also has less sugar than other types of chocolate, which means it is less likely to damage teeth.
Chips and starchy treats are not good choices, either. They contain a type of carbohydrate that is especially sticky, which means it is harder to rinse away from your teeth. When you are in the mood for a crunchy snack, almonds offer a powerful nutritional punch with calcium, magnesium and phosphate, all of which are critical for tooth health. When you need something sweet, skip the fruity candies and head straight for fresh fruit. Fruit is a naturally sweet, fibrous snack that contains plenty of vitamins and minerals that can strengthen tooth and gum healthy and mechanically clean your teeth.
