Late Night Snacking and Tooth Loss
One of the worst things you can do for your teeth is snack late at night. Studies have shown that snacking at night is more harmful to tooth enamel than snacking during the day, even on sugary sweets. This may be because plaque builds overnight on the teeth from late snacking, and is not removed by a steady flow of saliva. As we sleep, our mouths tend to dry out, creating a haven for harmful plaque and bacteria.
If plaque is left untreated, it can lead to serious consequences. First, cavities will form, which may require dental fillings. We are all familiar with this treatment for minor cavities, and while not pleasant, it is not considered dangerous or highly invasive.
However, if left untreated, cavities can lead to far greater problems. Root canal treatment may be necessary if a cavity is not treated properly, allowing the decay to spread to the roots of the teeth.
In very bad cases, restorative dentistry may be needed to replace teeth lost due to extensive decay or cavities caused by snacking and improper hygiene. Incredible as it seems, all of this can be the result of late-night snacking. If you choose to eat late at night, be sure to brush and floss before you retire.
