Maintaining Healthy Teeth at Home
Regular visits to our dentist can be the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy, but did you know that what you do at home could make or break your smile? Good dental habits are critical right from the start.
When you brush your teeth, use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste in a flavor and texture that you like. Brush using small, gentle circular movements with the brush at a 45-degree angle towards the gums. The teeth need to be cleaned on each surface, which takes about two minutes from start to finish. Brush after meals or twice a day.
After you brush, use a length of dental floss about a half a meter long, and wind it around your index fingers until you have a short length between both fingers. Slide the floss gently between each set of teeth, and scrape it along each side to clean plaque and debris. Wind the used floss to one finger and unroll fresh floss for the next set of teeth. Flossing tools can make the job easier. If you have a bridge or braces, you may need to use a floss threader to clean around the appliance.
Most patients need biannual checkups. At these appointments, you will get not just a cleaning but also a review of your dental habits and a dental exam. Dental X-rays can show us what is going on beneath the surface and help us identify early signs of problems. Fluoride or dental sealants may be suggested as a way to further safeguard your smile.
Good dental health depends on both what you do at home and the kind of professional care you get. Give us a call today to learn more or to schedule an appointment with our dentist in Northridge.
