Preventing Tooth Sensitivity to Hot and Cold

Protecting the enamel on your teeth is one of the best ways you can prevent tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. Brush your teeth gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and brush no sooner than half an hour after a meal to avoid scratching or damaging your enamel. Use fluoride toothpaste that has been designed specifically for sensitive teeth to reduce discomfort and floss daily. Our dentist may recommend a fluoride mouthwash or prescription product to further stabilize your teeth and reduce sensitivity.
Check your diet for any foods that could be contributing discomfort. Extremely acidic foods are often major offenders because they dissolve the enamel of your teeth. Soft drinks, energy drinks, citrus juices and other acidic beverages should be consumed in moderation.
