Restorations with Dental Crowns
Minor dental problems such as tooth decay or damage can usually be repaired using conservative treatments, including dental bonding or fillings. If your tooth has previously been restored or suffered serious structural damage, it may need more extensive treatment. Our Northridge dentist may recommend dental crowns.
A dental crown is usually made from porcelain. Porcelain is a strong, durable material that closely resembles the natural enamel of your tooth. The crown is shaped to match your tooth’s unique structure, and once it is in place, no one will ever know it is there. If you are a candidate for a dental crown, we can usually place it in about two visits.
During your first visit, we will shape and prepare the tooth. Because the dental crown covers the entire part of the tooth that extends above the gum line, some of the enamel needs to be removed to ensure a comfortable fit. We will then send the dental impressions and images of your tooth to the dental lab, where a technician will craft your new porcelain restoration. Once it is done, we will bond it right onto the tooth.
Taking good care of your new restoration can ensure it lasts longer. Brush twice daily, floss daily and visit us regularly for checkups and cleanings. Properly maintained porcelain crowns should last at least a decade or longer. If you have a damaged or treated tooth, a dental crown may be right for you.
